Encryption and .net
I'm coding the SiteTester application to store the password for the proxy server in an encrypted fashion... Found a great reference at the
DotNet Zone.. . Looks like an interesting site so far...
More to the point
FreeVBCode had a perfect set of code. Quite simply, I'm encrypting the proxy password before storing it in the xml config file.
Music Television?
A new network hit the cable in the last week or two. FUSE is now on channel 132. Not bad so far. They're actually playing music!
Testing
I'm putting the final touches on a little tool that will hopefully serve as an early warning system for network/internet access problems. We recently learned from one of our remote offices that it was taking them up to a minute to download the main page from CNN. (As Jon Stewart would say, 'whaaaaa?")
My new program will sit on a workstation in each office and go out to the internet and retrieve a series of web pages. It'll send email if the page is not returned within a certain amount of time or if the page does not contain a certain set of text. It's simple, but effective.
Security
I've burned the better part of the last four work days assisting our security team. They've been attempting to harden a win2k box. For those of you have attempted this, you know how difficult this can be. Usually, the machine you're trying to protect is rendered unusable at least once or twice.
Oddly enough, during a call with Microsoft yesterday (we had rendered the box unable to reach the domain) a Microsoft tech started to go on about how 'IIS Lockdown is all you need'. I couldn't believe he said this. They really have to keep someone like that further away from the customers.
What the hell?
I saw a woman on a Segway on Reade Street the other night. Odd looking things. Why does the idea of them catching on really piss me off?
FatFinger pushes on
Geoff has been diligently upgrading Fatfinger, and racked up some
good press along the way. Keep up the good work dude.
Thought you were cool?
Check out the
css zen garden. for awesome examples of the power of css. This is courtesy of the always interesting

Certifiable Part III

I passed 'Designing and Implementing Databases with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition' this morning. That pushes me over the bar into Microsoft Certified Application Developer territory.
Other wierdness
just for the sake of catching some original thoughts...

.net wierdness
I recently purchased a couple new Dells for home. They're great, but I had a frustrating time getting visual studio.net to debug web apps. Finally uninstalling the .net runtime (that came installed with xp professional) and replacing it from vs disks did the trick.
